Mirus Magazine - Democratic Desert

The Syrian conflict is entering its third year. In this time there has been little if any international support from Democratic leaders to end the killing despite the fact that over 120 000 Syrians have been killed, as well as over 28 000 have gone missing. 2.2 million Syrians are displaced within their country and over 1.5 million Syrians are now refugees in neighboring countries. During this time I have found that the international community finds it easer to condemn the image makers rather than the perpetrators of war crimes against humanity.

Since February of 2012 I have been documenting an unprecedented tragedy of the blatant targeting of journalists, civilians and hospitals by the al-Assad regime. As a witness to the slaughter of innocent civilians along with a number of other serious human rights violations and war crimes it is not my job to aspire towards aesthetically pleasing images of war that are palatable to the public or the photographic community. With that said this book will be a testament against these war crimes against humanity committed in Syria.
The book is titled “The Democratic Desert” and contains over 150 images and will contain writings by the award winning author Anthony Loyd. The book will inlcude a copy of the full length 90 minute documentary that premiered at the Cannes film festival titled “Ground Zero Syria” produced by vice. – Robert King
